DIY Cake-Stand

Please check out my shorter version of this tutorial at Examiner.com. I write DIY articles over there! Subscribe to keep up with my latest articles.

Here is a tutorial on how to make your own cake stand from things found at Goodwill or maybe from your own home! I can't take full credit for this idea because I know there are multiple how-to's online! However, this is my own take on it with my own tips and tricks!

Here is a DIY cake-stand how-to.

What you’ll need:
-1 candle stick - size and shape of your choice. Just be sure it's nice and sturdy.
-1 plate - size and shape of your choice
-Glass Bonding glue - bead and glass, or any glue that bonds glass to glass.
-Spray Paint (optional)

Step 1: Wash your glassware (get those germs off!)
Step 2:  Find the center of your plate (on the back) and mark it.

Step 3: Apply the glass glue to the top of the candle stick and stick it to the bottom center of the plate - it works best if you flip your plate over and lay it flat on the table. Follow the specific directions for  application of the particular glue you chose. It might be different from mine!

Step 4: Let it dry -Drying directions may also vary for different glues.
Step 5: Wipe with a damp cloth and dry before spray painting. Oils from your fingers or dust can create weird spots on your piece.
Make sure you are in a well ventilated area, and follow the directions for your particular spray paint. Usually you wait just a few minutes between coats. I find that two light coats usually does the trick!  Let your paint dry and taa daa! You have yourself a one of a kind cake stand!
If you want your plate to be food safe, then find a food safe sealant to spray over it (I have never done this so I don't have any tips for you). I usually just place a doily on top to keep it from directly touching my foods, just to be safe.
For washing, just wipe gently with a damp cloth. The paint will chip off easily (especially if you didn't seal it) if you scrub at it.
I hope you enjoy your cute cake-stand. I used these for my wedding reception and got a lot of comments on them!

If you look closely, I used more then just candle sticks. One of them was a cup, and another one was an old globe light. Just scour the store and see what will work! I sprayed them all a glossy black to go with my theme. They looked fabulous, and they were SO. CHEAP.
